• Caldaro Lake

The warmest lake for bathing in the Alps.

Lake Caldaro (Lago di Caldaro) is situated at 216 m and originates from an old riverbed of the Adige river, about 14 km in the south of the main city, which is Bolzano.
Lago di Caldaro is one of the largest lakes in South Tyrol. One of the main characteristics of the lakes is its pleasant water temperature. Due to its minor depth, already in spring the temperature of the water is about 17° to 19°. In summer, however, it might rise up to pleasant 28 degrees.

The lake is about 1.8 km long, 0.9 km wide and the deepest point is about 5.6 m. This figures result in a surface of 1.47 sqkm… enough for all those who love water sports… as this lake is not only perfect for swimming, but also for rowing, sailing and windsurfing.

Moreover lake Caldaro also includes the largest wetland area between the Pianura Padana and Alpine divide and has also been admitted to the European reserve “Natura 2002″. This is where you can find a fairytale-like landscape! Hikes to Leuchtenburg Castle or a walk round the lake are only some of the possibilities adults and children can enjoy at Lago di Caldaro.

  • Mendola Funicular Railway

Another attraction is the Mendola funicular railway, which is one of the longest and steepest of its kind throughout Europe. This means of transport has been inaugurated in 1903 in S. Antonio and has been established in order to reach Passo Mendola. The difference in altitude that this funicular has to overcome is 850 metres. However, the Mendola Mountain can also be reached on foot. This mountain has traditionally been a summer health resort for numerous inhabitants of Caldaro. Still today the inhabitants enjoy a hike on Mendola mountain in order to escape summer heat.
