  • Trekking near Caldaro: Rastenbachklamm and the ruins of Castelvecchio

The wild romantic biotope with waterfalls and typical vegetation of a gorge is a popular tourist attraction.
A hike across the fascinating gorge, which lies hidden in the Castelvecchio forest near Caldaro, is a real adventure both for adults and children, as there is much to see…

From the 15th to the 17th centuries, the area of Castelvecchio lead or has been mined and for this reason it has also been populated very early. The ruin of S. Pietro and its sacrificial altar, which is situated on the road to the Rastenbachklamm gorge, can be found in this forest. By the way it is considered to be the oldest church of Tyrol.

    Itinerary

    WALKING TIME: 2.5 – 3 hours
    ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: about 400 metres
    ALTITUDES: 221 – 620 asl
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: easy hiking trail through woods and pastures, steps and bridges at the ravine

Our hiking tour starts at the Minigolf near the Caldaro Lake, where we can leave our car at a big parking space. We follow trail number 10 in the direction of the main street, which we cross, and go on towards South (in the direction of Hotel Sonnleitenhof), turning right at the following two forks. Having crossed the Rastenbach river, we follow the asphalted road until we reach the last few houses. This is where we continue our hike on trail number 13, which will directly lead us to the romantic Rastenbach ravine.

After several steps and bridges we finally reach an impressive cascade. We make a short detour to the near basilica of San Pietro, most probably the oldest church of Tyrol, simply following the relevant signposts.

Back at the Rastenbach ravine, we continue our tour and finally arrive at the small village of Castelvecchio. After having spent enough time to enjoy the wonderful panorama, we follow the asphalted road towards North for about 700 metres, passing an old bridge (at a bend), until we reach the parking space Müllereck on our right. From here, we continue our hike on trail number 13 (Bärentalwanderweg). Walking down the valley through a beautiful deciduous forest, at the Vogelmeierhof farm we finally reach the trail on which we have ascended, and continue our tour back to the starting point.
