    The most significant monasteries in entire Tyrol

    The Monastery of Novacella/Neustift was founded in 1142 by the blessed bishop Hartmann as Augustinian canon foundation and became one of the most important centres of learning (convent school).

    This is one of the most significant monasteries in entire Tyrol, and the majority of it is open to the public: the Baroque collegiate church with famous ceiling frescoes by Matthäus Günther, the medieval cloister with frescoes from the 14th and 15th century and the tomb of the troubadour Oswald von Wolkenstein, the “Engelsburg” (former hospice), the chapel of St. Vigil, the fountain of the Wonders of the World, the library with its collection of precious manuscripts, and the art gallery with its impressive collection of Gothic panel paintings (by Friedrich Pacher, Marx Reichlich and Andreas Haller).

    Guided monastery tours: (min. 10 persons) from Monday to Saturday at 10am/11am/ 2pm/3pm and 4pm (excluding Sundays and holydays of obligation).
